Medical staff on strike

The Dominican Medical Association (CMD) and other healthcare sector unions have announced a new strike, this time affecting the eastern region and the Greater Santo Domingo area. The strike will include all Dominican Social Security Institute (IDSS) hospitals.

The strike has been called for tomorrow, Wednesday 3 February 2016 in the east and for Thursday 4 February in Santo Domingo, although emergency services and critical treatment for patients will continue to be provided.

The organizers say that they have called the strike in response to the authorities’ failure to respond to the sector’s demands, which include a pay raise and improved pension scheme.

Meanwhile, National Health Service (SNS) director Ramon Alvarado announced a month of talks to try and come to an agreement.
