Minister of Agriculture Angel Estevez has announced the resumption of bell pepper and avocado exports after a nine-month ban following the detection of MedFly in the Punta Cana area. The ban was lifted for production in 23 of 32 provinces. Estevez said that one exporter has already sent 26 freight containers with the produce to customers in Puerto Rico. Estevez said the challenge for exporters now is to recover their clients.
Avocado Cluster president Jose Rosa said that the ban was lifted on Thursday, 7 January 2016 and by the following Sunday, refrigerated shipments left the country for export markets on the east coast of the United States.
Exports are expected to resume gradually as vegetables are again planted for exports.
