A Dominican Republic national has been arrested at Kennedy Airport in New York with nearly three kilos of cocaine hidden inside three mortar and pestle sets he was carrying in his luggage.
According to court records Mario Javier Morffe arrived on Friday, 29 January 2016 on a JetBlue flight from Santo Domingo and US Customs and Border Protection officers thought that the wooden sets were unusually heavy, and the mortar bowls were unusually shallow. On examination a white powder was found in the mortar that tested positive for cocaine.
After being read his rights, Morffe told agents that he too thought the mortar and pestle sets were unusually heavy.
Morffe, who claimed he worked in sales in the Dominican Republic, was ordered held without bail.
