Four fronts of PLD electoral campaign

The ruling PLD has announced that the 2016 electoral campaign will have four fronts directed by presidential candidate Danilo Medina, the president of the PLD and former President Leonel Fernandez, former First Lady and Vice President Margarita Cedeno and the president of the PRD, the new PLD ally, Miguel Vargas Maldonado.

President Danilo Medina is the candidate to beat in the elections. Most polls show he has more than the 50%+1 voters to win in a first round, but some reflect a second round might be necessary. As the election date approaches, the polls also show his popularity has been dropping. Medina became the PLD candidate after striking a series of political deals with opposition legislators to change the 2010 Constitution to allow consecutive presidential re-election.

Campaign director Jose Ramon Peralta has already announced that the campaign will take off in full when President Danilo Medina visits the south and southwest of the country this Saturday, 6 February. The President will tour the area with a circuit of the Enriquillo Lake on a trip that will take him to meet voters in Barahona, Bahoruco and Independencia provinces. On Sunday, 7 February, on his way back to Santo Domingo, Medina will visit Azua, Bani and San Cristobal.

If PLD is victorious in 2016, it will become the political party that has won most consecutive elections. The record is held by the PRSC with then candidate the late President Joaquin Balaguer.
