Some food prices coming down

Prices for some foodstuffs in Santo Domingo’s public markets are beginning to come down as production increases, reports Minister of Agriculture Angel Estevez. He says that the prices of some items, including chicken, were reduced by between 5% and 20% last week.

Duarte Mercado Nuevo Stallholders Federation president Luis Taveras said that production of certain products had increased resulting in lower prices for tomatoes, cilantro, lettuce, beets, carrots and plantains due to the rains since August and September.

Good quality plantains now cost between RD$12 and RD$14, down from RD$18. One local supermarket even had plantains on sale at RD$9 per unit.

Taveras said that the worst enemy of agricultural production was the drought, and he expressed hope that it would not continue during 2016.
