AMET “mafia” leads to firing of deputy director

President Danilo Medina has fired AMET deputy director Colonel Riquelme Soriano Garcia after the officer was accused of involvement in a so-called “mafia” at the institution, which he has denied.

Officers under him reported that the scheme affected billions of pesos in government revenue when traffic violation fines were not entered into the system. Soriano is accused of receiving commissions from underlings in return for allowing them to continue offering their services at certain points in the city and at the Odebrecht construction company.

Colonels Hector Alejandro de los Santos Heredia, Ramon Morillo Ortega, Carlos Moises Martinez Martinez and Ventura Delbrando Guzman Toribio, and mayors Gregory Dorian Bryan Perez, Manuel Jacinto Reyes and Francisco Jorge Rodriguez are also under investigation.

El Nacional reported that the “mafia” channeled millions of pesos every month.

The director general of Amet, Frener Bello Arias, via memorandum No. 0342 del 29-09-15 started an investigation that found serious faults in the services in Santiago, Puerto Plata, Santo Domingo North and Santo Domingo East.

Yesterday, Wednesday, 3 February 2016, AMET spokesman Diego Pesqueira said that the accused officers would be prosecuted.
