Conep: Traffic chaos contributes to crime

National Business Council (Conep) president Rafael Blanco said yesterday, Wednesday 3 February 2016 that Santo Domingo’s chaotic traffic system contributes to street crime and warned that without public safety it is difficult to develop efficient economic activity. Hosting a visit by National Police chief Nelson Peguero Paredes, Blanco pointed out that the traffic jams and general disorder “permits the existence of petty thievery that has become widespread on Dominican streets.”

He expressed his concerns about the frequent theft of cell phones on the streets. “It is impossible to cross the road without feeling unsafe because there is no organization of traffic,” he stated, and called on the National Police to work together with the Metropolitan Transport Authority to tackle this situation.
