UASD hunger strike for restart of classes

Professors and administrative staff at the state Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) are striking in demand of a 40% wage increases and additional budget from the government. UASD staff members are already the best-paid university professors and administrative staff in the country.

Now students have begun a hunger strike by the statue of Duarte on the campus demanding the stop to the eight-day strike. Rafelito Valenzuela, director of Vanguardia Estudiantil student group said the hunger strike would continue until classes resumed. He said that the Federacion de Asociaciones de Profesores de la Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo (Faprouasd) would be responsible for anything that happens to the students. Valenzuela said that the decision was made in protest at the possible collapse of the semester and because the students’ right to education was being violated. The work stoppage by the professors is affecting more than 200,000 students.
