Inter-American Human Rights Commission issues report

In a report published yesterday, Tuesday 9 February 2016, the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights (ICHR) calls on the Dominican Republic to restore nationality to everyone born in the country who was affected by Constitutional Court ruling 168-13 mostly people of Haitian descent.

In a document that is very critical of the Dominican government, they asked the State to annul the Constitutional Court ruling and retroactively reinstate the tenet of “jus soli” arguing that it allows everyone born on Dominican soil to have Dominican nationality.

The Commission based its report on a visit to the country between 2 and 6 December 2013.
