Now in his eightieth year, Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez (born 31 October, 1936) is well past the 75 years retirement age. The appointment needs to come from the Vatican. The leading candidates are 44-year old Monsignor Victor Emilio Masalles (Santo Domingo), 58-year old Monsignor Julio Cesar Corniel (Puerto Plata), 49-year old Monsignor Andres Napoleon Romero (Barahona), 65-year old Monsignor Francisco Ozoria (San Pedro de Macoris), 67-year old Monsignor Diomedes Espinal de Leon (Mao Montecristi) and 55-year old Monsignor Hector Rafael Rodriguez (La Vega).
