The Ministry of Public Health and the Emergency Operations Center (COE) presented the steps taken to prepare for the spread of the Zika virus in the Dominican Republic yesterday, Wednesday 11 February 2016. This information was provided to humanitarian agencies and NGOs.
Dr. Nelson Rodriguez Monegro of the Ministry of Public Health told those present that in response to the World Health Organization’s international declaration of a health emergency for the Zika virus, the relevant government agencies have established a priority to effectively deal with this virus and reduce its effect on the population. He said that the Health Ministry has stepped up its emergency health responses programs nationwide because of reports of microcephaly and neurological problems linked to the disease, such as Guillian-Barre Syndrome in Brazil and other countries.
