Minou Tavarez Mirabal was officially proclaimed as the presidential candidate for the Alianza por la Democracia (APD) political party at an event at the Club Mauricio Baez in Santo Domingo yesterday, Sunday 14 February 2016. She is the daughter of Trujillo-era freedom fighters Minerva Mirabal and Manolo Tavarez Justo. She resigned as a PLD deputy in 2014. In her acceptance speech she called on citizens to put a halt to lack of citizen safety, inequality, low wages and corruption. She called for the need for an in-depth transformation of the state.
Tavarez is the president and founder of the Opcion Democratica political party, which was not able to secure official recognition to run in the 2016 general election. She formed an alliance with the APD, led by former APD presidential candidate Max Puig who was also present at the event.
