Reason not to debate: Abinader has low-level discussion

Presidential spokesman Roberto Rodriguez Marchena says that President Danilo Medina is not using government funds in his campaign. On the campaign trail, the President travels around the country accompanied by his cabinet officials.

Nevertheless, as reported in MetroRD in its 15 February 2016 print version headline story, Rodriguez Marchena argued that President Danilo Medina would not participate in a US-style debate against Luis Abinader of the PRM because the leading opposition candidate has a “low-level discussion without proposals. “Because if the other person who would participate in the debate does not have an attitude of debating, but rather of disqualifying, then it is very difficult to debate,” said Rodriguez. He said that Abinader has denounced the irregular use of public funds in the PLD campaign without presenting any evidence.

Rodriguez said that Danilo Medina would take part in the debate if the PRM presidential candidate changes his attitude and outlines his government proposal that he says the Dominican people are unaware of.

Meanwhile, Minister of the Presidency Gustavo Montalvo sent out a memorandum with a reminder to all government officials that it is strictly prohibited to use vehicles and other state resources in events that are not strictly related to government matters.

On Saturday, 13 February 2016 President Danilo Medina called on the JCE to do its work and prevent any PLD member from damaging his candidacy by using state funds. “I would like to tell the JCE that we back those parties in their request, that they follow our activities and monitor our performance,” said the President.
