350,000 cruise passengers expected at Amber Cove

Carnival Corporation group’s vice president, development & operations, global port & destination development, David Candib has announced that they expect to receive some 350,000 cruise passengers during 2016 at the Amber Cove Cruise Center port in Maimon, Puerto Plata that began operations in October 2015. He announced that eight cruise lines would be bringing tourists from countries including Germany, the UK, the US and Italy.

Amber Cove is prepared to receive 8,000 cruise passengers and 2,000 crew members at the same time. Candib said the US$90 million investment is the largest that Carnival has made in a port center.

Speaking at a recent National Shippers Association (ANRD) luncheon event, he said that in the next two to five years that number should increase to between 500,000 and one million visitors for Puerto Plata.

Last year, 549,950 passengers visited the Dominican Republic’s cruise terminals in Santo Domingo, La Romana, Samana and now Puerto Plata, according to Ministry of Tourism data.
