The Russian authorities are reporting the country’s first case of the zika virus, reportedly contracted by a woman who had been on vacation in the Dominican Republic. The woman, who is said to be in satisfactory condition, is being treated in an infectious diseases unit at a Moscow hospital.
The woman had no symptoms when she returned from her vacation but after several days she started feeling unwell, and developed a fever and a rash. Laboratory tests subsequently revealed the presence of the zika virus.
Russian health authorities are keeping her immediate family under observation although so far they have not been affected.
The airplane in which she returned to Russia has been disinfected to prevent any health risks to other passengers.
