According to recent research on physical abuse by World Vision and Gallup, 27.8% of children and adolescents in the Dominican Republic are subjected to some type of physical punishment.
The study was conducted as part of the 2014 Household Survey and is showed that at least 51% of children under the age of 14 had been punished in some way at home, and 22.5% had been punished physically.
However, the study also showed that 92.7% of heads of household (mother or father) stated they did not agree with mistreating children, while 5.8% said they were in agreement.
Psychiatrist Carlos de los Angeles said that these figures seemed low compared to previous studies, such as the 2010 Census on Population and Housing, which said that 67% of homes said they used punishment to discipline children.
