Former minister of Tourism and mayor of Santo Domingo, Rafael (Fello) Subervi was sworn in as a PRD member yesterday, Tuesday 16 February 2016 by party president Miguel Vargas Maldonado, now the strongest ally of the ruling PLD. Subervi had left the party with the dissidents who formed the PRM, whose presidential candidate is Luis Abinader. Subervi aspired to be the PRM candidate for National District mayor, but instead, the party selected deputy David Collado as its candidate. Subervi’s son, “Fellito” also aspired to be appointed as deputy for the PRM and was not chosen. The PRD under former PRD presidential candidate Miguel Vargas Maldonado will be receiving RD$429 million in funds for its campaigns. The PRD is supporting the candidacy of President Danilo Medina. According to polls, the party’s popularity dropped to under 5% when Miguel Vargas announced the decision to back Medina.
