Two small fires, one in the National Audit Office and the other in the National Statistics’ Office (ONE) yesterday, Tuesday 16 February 2016, meant that staff had to be evacuated from both institutions.
In the Audit Office, which is in the Treasury Building behind the government office building known as the Huacal, the fire began due to a short circuit in the bathrooms and fire crew responded. Communications director Carlos Tomas del Pozo said that people were evacuated on the recommendation of the contingency committee. Smoke could be seen, but the press was not allowed to enter and the staff did not want to reveal where the smoke was coming from or what damage had been done.
Meanwhile in ONE, located on the ninth floor of the Huacal, staff was also evacuated due to smoke after the batteries in a UPS device burned out due to a power surge.
No one was injured in either incident.
