Chamber of Accounts: public institutions don’t pay taxes

Chamber of Accounts president Licelott Marte de Barrios says that the taxes retained by public institutions and not paid to the Treasury or to the Social Security Treasury are one of the most common errors detected by her agency. Marte de Barrios was speaking to reporters during the Listin Diario breakfast meeting yesterday, Wednesday 17 February 2016 and said that some government agencies are withholding taxes that should be transferred to the Treasury.

“We have sent the DGII an large number of audits so they can verify whether these institutions have paid those taxes collected because according to the audit they had not paid any sum to the state and we are talking about one billion pesos,” said the head of the Chamber of Accounts.

The DGII says they are in contact with the government agencies to reach agreements for payments, while others say they no longer have the funds.

Marte de Barrios told reporters: “Something is going on, because if this is indeed the case, we are handling and auditing a budget that is not real, because those resources should enter, and if they entered they should also enter into the general budget funds.”

She also said that several state institutions deduct taxes from employees but do not pay the Social Security Treasury (TSS).
