In today’s Diario Libre, Monday 22 February 2016, executive editor Adriano Miguel Tejada writes that the Dominican Republic lacks thinkers who are capable of focusing the public attention on the issues in the long term, as opposed to the short term. “Short-termism has stolen our future,” he writes.
“It could be said it is the government’s responsibility, but administrations generally do not see beyond the term for which they are elected,” he comments.
He calls for all sectors of society to look further beyond when it comes to the national problems. He stresses it is not about signing pacts, which are usually tainted by special interests, but about providing the goals so that everyone rows in the same direction. “It is about opening roads, and that way, demonstrating the potential of an activity,” he said.
“This country is immensely rich: it is bankrupt every four years and it keeps going. Why not use that wealth and that potential on good investments in good models acceptable to all?”
He concludes: “That is what is missing. Not more government. What is missing is more creative initiative and a greater sense of future.”
