Transparency International’s Secretariat has launched an independent public inquiry into the facts behind the corruption allegations against San Juan de la Maguana Senator Felix Bautista, ranked fourth on a list of the world’s most corrupt people in a TI probe. Bautista served as director of the Office of Supervisory Engineers of State Works (OISOE), before being elected to his current post as senator for San Juan de Maguana. He is also the organizational secretary of the ruling PLD party.
As reported, lawyers for the TI Secretariat met with Senator Bautista’s lawyers on 4 February 2016 and presented a list of specific questions, based on information available on the Internet and a letter that Senator Bautista had sent to TI Secretariat in January 2016 asking to be removed from the list on the grounds that he was cleared of all accusations by the Supreme Court of Justice. Despite several attempts, a hearing into the alleged corruption accusations has never been able to reach the courts, as the senator’s legal counsel has been successful in securing judgments that have prevented the accusations from being heard in a trial.
The TI Secretariat is awaiting responses to several questions from Bautista and has said that it will keep the public fully informed on the progress of the inquiry as it proceeds, including any answers provided by Senator Bautista to the questions presented.
