President Danilo Medina says that although Brazilian publicist, Joao Santana was a key member of his team, everything would proceed according to plan despite his resignation to return to Brazil to face corruption charges linked to the Petrobras scandal.
When asked whether Santana’s absence would affect his re-election chances, Medina said that although he was a key advisor, there were more consultants and the campaign would continue. He went on to say that Santana had approached him and said that he had to return to Brazil to defend himself and was thus unable to remain as a campaign advisor. He arrived in Brazil yesterday, Tuesday 23 February 2016.
Attorney General Francisco Dominguez Brito confirmed that the Dominican Republic had not received any request from Interpol or Brazil to arrest Santana. Meanwhile, Vinicio Castillo Seman, deputy and candidate for senator for the National Progressive Force Party (FNP) is asking for a formal investigation into Joao Santana’s activities during his stay in the country as millions of dollars had been transferred from Africa to the Dominican Republic and then on to Brazil.
