One of the major players in the electricity industry in the Dominican Republic, Inter-Energy Holdings proposes to invest an additional US$200 million in energy production. Chief executive Rolando Gonzalez Bunster said that his group was willing to make this investment in order to incorporate new technology for the sale, smart metering, prepayment and protection of the distribution networks in order to reduce the technical and non-technical losses to the minimum accepted international levels.
Gonzalez Bunster made his announcement as the keynote speaker at the American Chamber of Commerce (Amcham) monthly luncheon meeting earlier this week. He said he was responding to a request made by President Medina at a previous AmCham luncheon for business sector cooperation to create public and private alliances to solve both the electricity problems as well as to fight poverty and provide greater opportunities for increasing the middle class and establishing a true welfare state.
Gonzalez Bunster said that the new investment depends on the fulfillment of General Electricity Law 125-01, which will provide the incentives needed for this type of private investment.
