Independence Cycling Tour continues

The Caribbean’s leading cycling tour, the Independence Tour, now in its 37th year, continues on Tuesday, 1 March 2016 with competitors now heading east. In the first stage, the cyclists were in Santo Domingo before heading to the southwest.

Cristian Torres of the United States won the Santo Domingo-Barahona leg (175 km passing by San Cristobal, Bani and Azua) with a time of 3:52:58, followed by Dominican Rafael Meran and Matthew James of the US. Meran has the best record for the first two legs. Meran won the first leg, a 20km race against the clock around Mirador del Sur Park.

The competition continues tomorrow, Tuesday 1 March 2016, with a 187km stretch from Santo Domingo to Miches leaving from the city hall in the Centro de los Heroes at noon, continuing to Boca Chica and from there to Miches.

Overall, the cycling tour covers a 1,050km route and passes by San Pedro de Macoris, La Romana, Higuey, El Seibo, Hato Mayor, Nagua, San Francisco de Macoris, Santiago and La Vega.

21 national and international teams and 140 cyclists are taking part in the competition.
