The Mauricio Baez basketball team won the opening game at the Palacio de los Deportes in the National District Superior Basketball Tournament yesterday, Sunday 28 February 2016. The Mauricio Baez city team, which had not played as a team since 2003, defeated San Carlos 74-66.
In the second game of the evening, Club Rafael Barias defeated San Lazaro 75-71.
An estimated 3,000-4,000 fans attended the opening of the tournament, as reported in Listin Diario.
During the opening held at the sports arena on Sunday, 28 February 2016, former Dominican national team basketball player Hugo Cabrera was honored and the members of the gold medal winning Dominican team to Centrobasket 1977. The ceremony was attended by former basketball greats Aldo Leschorn, Hector Monegro, Chicho Sibilio, Manolito Prince, Evaristo Perez, Vinicio Munoz, Ivan Mieses, Victor Chacon, Alejandro Tejeda, Pepe Rozon, Frank Prats, Cabrera himself and coach Humberto Rodriguez. Listin Diario points out that basketball player Eduardo Gomez and coach Faisal Abel were missing from the legendary Dominican national team and golden era National District basketball teams.
