Cholera in Bani jail leads to two deaths

An outbreak of cholera at the jail in Bani has led to 20 inmates being infected with the disease and two deaths.

Approximately two weeks ago, 20 inmates in the public jail at Bani showed symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting. The existence of cholera was confirmed by laboratory tests.

Increased control measures, including food safety and water chlorination, have been put in place at the jail and no new cases have been reported in the past eight days.

Cholera is a bacterial disease that is usually spread by eating contaminated food or drinking contaminated water. Water is contaminated by the feces of an infected person or by untreated sewage.

If untreated, death can occur within hours due to the rapid loss of body fluids, which leads to dehydration and shock.
