Giuliani advises on citizen security

The former mayor of New York, Rudolph Giuliani, is in the country in his role as public safety advisor for the opposition presidential candidate Luis Abinader of the PRM.

At a press conference yesterday, Monday 29 February 2016 the former mayor focused on corruption as the root of the country’s problems. “Corruption is born, grows and ends in the highest levels. There needs to be a commitment and zero tolerance to end corruption and that has to come from the highest levels of government. Because if there is corruption high up, that is worse,” he said at the press conference.

He advised restoring trust in the police and improving public safety with salary increases for the police, prosecutors and judges among the first measures to be taken.

He stressed that in order to fight crime there is a need to fight against corruption, starting with political will to do so among top government officials, right down to the judiciary and high-ranking police officers as well as recommending an improvement in training for the forces of law and order.

He went on to say that his measures would improve the economy, as more foreigners would want to invest in the country if security was improved.

During the press conference, Abinader recalled that when Giuliani was mayor of New York, from 1994 to 2001, the city saw a 60% drop in crime.

Medina administration spokesman Roberto Rodriguez Marchena said that the government is already applying the citizen safety proposals that Giuliani came to make to Abinader. He mentioned the 911 emergency system and installation of surveillance cameras. “We have done more than what Giuliani is proposing, and that is without mentioning human rights issues for car window cleaners and the homeless in New York,” he commented when asked by journalists.
