Homicides down in DR

Public safety expert Daniel Pou says that the homicide rate in the Dominican Republic is at its lowest point in the past 15 years. He said the rate was 17.3% of homicides per 100,000 inhabitants. The rate had surged to 26.5% in 2005, with an escalation of armed robberies in houses, shopping malls and on the streets.

He stressed the key roles played by the 911 Security system and the installation of surveillance cameras around Santo Domingo.

He said that most homicides these days were caused by misunderstandings and communications problems, pointing to the many cases of killings over situations like parking space use disputes and domestic violence.

He said that former New York City mayor Rudolph Giuliani did not have anything to contribute to security in the Dominican Republic. Giuliani recently was announced as public safety advisor to PRM presidential candidate Luis Abinader.
