President Danilo Medina has selected Vice President Margarita Cedeno as his running mate in the 15 May 2016 election. He was speaking during an event commemorating International Woman’s Day yesterday Sunday, 6 March 2016. Cedeno is married to former President Leonel Fernandez, the president of the PLD ruling party.
The announcement was not part of Medina’s official speech at the event, which was held at the Volleyball Pavilion in Santo Domingo’s Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center. “Margarita will continue for four more years,” he stated.
The President said he recognized her skills, efficiency and high level of responsibility for matters of state.
“Thank you for trusting a woman,” said Cedeno upon hearing the announcement.
First Lady Candida Montilla, Senate president Cristina Lizardo, Higher Education Minister Ligia Melo were also present at the event.
Cedeno aspired to be the PLD’s presidential candidate in the 2012 presidential election.
Violinist Aisha Syed opened the event with a solo rendition of “Por amor” by Rafael Solano followed by Millie Quezada singing “Vive” and Tercer Cielo singing “Creere.”
