Indotel: 8.79 million mobile phones in use

With a population of 9,445,281 according to the 2010 National Census, the Dominican Republic had 8.79 million mobile telephone lines in use as of December 2015, according to data published by the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (Indotel) and reported by Telecom Paper online. Of the total, 6.86 million are pre-paid lines and 1.93 million are post-paid.

Claro (Codetel) maintains its position as market leader with a 51% market share or 4.47 million lines followed by Orange (Altice) with 41% or 3.58 million.

There are also 1.15 million landlines in operation, of which Claro had 800,129, followed by Tricom with 206,174, Trilogy (Viva) with 120,308 lines.

The number of Internet accounts totals 4.91 million (4.71 million in November), with Compania Dominicana de Telefonos/Claro (2.46 million) or 50% and Orange Dominicana/Altice (2.21 million) with 45%, accounting for the overwhelming majority.
