Who is Carolina Mejia?

Luis Abinader’s running mate for this year’s presidential election, 46-year old Rosa Carolina Mejia Gomez was born in Santiago on 28 March 1969, daughter of Hipolito Mejia and Rosa Gomez. She graduated from the Colegio Santo Domingo and then traveled to O’Sullivan College and Concordia University in Montreal to study office system technology and French as a second language. She subsequently graduated in economics from the PUCMM in Santiago. She carried out postgraduate marketing studies at the Barna Business School during her father’s Presidency and took the Harvard Business School Course: “Strategy: Building and Sustaining a Competitive Advantage” in 2007.

She was in charge of commercial relations with US and Canadian telephone companies at Codetel from 1991-1993. During her father’s Presidency, from 2000-2004 she was “coordinator of the advisory board of the President of the Republic.” In 2003-2004 she was appointed ambassador in charge of trade relations and member of the coordinating team for the DR-CAFTA free trade agreement. She was also designated as an alternate member of the Monetary Board of the Central Bank of the Republic.

She is married to businessman Juan Garrigo and they have three children: Juan de Jesus, Diego Jose and Isabel Carolina.
