President Danilo Medina has called for two more all-out anti-mosquito days of action across the country targeting mosquito breeding grounds in an attempt to eliminate the Aedes Aegypti mosquito that causes dengue, zika and chikungunya.
Public Health Minister Altagracia Guzman Marcelino announced the anti-mosquito campaign following a meeting with the President and his cabinet at the Presidential Palace yesterday, Tuesday 8 March 2016.
The campaign will be carried out next Friday 18 and Saturday 19 March, in coordination with public institutions and local governments.
Guzman Marcelino said that there was a budget of around RD$1 billion for eradicating the mosquito.
According to the Public Health Minister, 428 suspected cases of Zika have been reported to date. They have not yet been confirmed, as the samples have to be sent to the United States for testing, so part of this budget would be used to purchase the necessary reagents so that testing can be carried out in the country at the Laboratorio Nacional.
