After the recent explosions at three propane gas stations located in heavily populated areas, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce has announced a moratorium on issuing new permits for the installation of new filling stations until the regulations that govern (Safety Ruling 2119-72) the sector are revised. The Ministry has ordered inspections of all existing LPG stations to assess whether they meet safety and fire prevention measures, as stipulated in Decree 307-01 and the ruling for the application of the Hydrocarbons Law 112-00. The Ministry has ordered the stations to carry out risk assessments and to take immediate measures to improve safety, which must be reported to the Ministry in six months time with another six months for their implementation. The Ministry says that in cases where stations fail to meet the standards within this one-year period, their permits will be cancelled.
