The Ministry of Public Works has announced the start of works to widen the Las Americas Highway below the Juan Carlos bridge at the intersection with Charles de Gaulle Avenue in Santo Domingo East, to eliminate the traffic jams.
The highway, in the area around the Juan Carlos Bridge currently has two 3.3m lanes but the work will extend it to three 3.5m lanes on both sides and a new access road to enter the elevated section of Charles de Gaulle and to leave it. The lack of this access road is one of the reasons for the traffic jams.
A public bus station will also be built, as well as a pedestrian overpass across the Las Americas highway.
