Outstanding women recognized

President Danilo Medina honored ten Dominican women who have made outstanding contributions during their lives in areas like health, education, participation, economic empowerment in a ceremony commemorating International Women’s Day, yesterday, Tuesday 8 March. The winners of the Merit Medal were TV host Jatnna Tavarez and Donata Antonia Gutierrez as a professional, Haydeli del Rosario Toribio Diaz and Mercedes Amparo Pimentel Perez for education, Altagracia Esperanza Esquea for Health Science, Magda Alina Rodriguez Azcona and Eunice Josefina Jimeno Olivier for political participation, Sonia Mercedes Hurtado Casals for community work and Rafaela Perez for philanthropic work.

Francia Garcia Reyes received a posthumous award.

During the presentation of the awards, President Medina warned that inequality and violence were both dangerous threats to the Dominican family and called for peace for all Dominicans.

In a message to all women, he promised that he would always be on their side and that women’s requests and concerns would be a priority for his government.

He also said that he supported the development of programs to create new jobs.

Minister for Women Alejandrina German gave the main speech at the event, which was also attended by Vice President Margarita Cedeno.
