There are now more confirmed cases of Guillian-Barre Syndrome (GBS) in the Dominican Republic, according to the head of the UCE Medical Center, Carlos Tavarez Rodriguez.
Dr. Tavarez Rodriguez said the UCE Medical Center has treated eight patients who have developed symptoms of GBS after being affected by the Zika virus in the last two months. Dr. Tavarez Rodriguez told El Caribe, that he was surprised by the situation, since according to his words: “it is very strange to find so many cases of GBS in the same place and in such a short period of time.”
He said that the cases at the UCE Medical Center included children and adults, both male and female. He also made it clear that GBS is not found exclusively in patients diagnosed with Zika or dengue. He said that one complication that they have is the fact that GBS is not exclusive to Zika and can be found in patients who have had dengue and the flu.
GBS is a syndrome that affects the nervous system and in typical cases the patient begins to lose mobility from the feet to the upper limbs.
