Yesterday’s edition of Acento, Wednesday 9 March 2016, focused on the Dominican expat vote abroad in a contribution by Central Electoral Board (JCE) judge, Jose Angel Aquino. Dominican expats were first able to vote abroad for the President and Vice President of the country in the 2004 presidential election. At the time, 52,440 registered to vote.
For the 2016 general election, 384,522 Dominicans have registered to vote abroad. This is 5.68% of the total voting roll of 6,765,073. The breakdown is 53.57% women and 46.43% men.
There are 223 overseas voting locations in schools and community associations as well as in the Dominican embassies in Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Chile, France, Germany, United Kingdom and Uruguay.
Most of Dominican voters are located in the United States and Puerto Rico, with the largest population of Dominican expats with 274,439 registered voters, or 71.37% of the total expat registry. Next is Spain with 63,022 voters or 16.39%, the Lesser Antilles with 13,707 (3.56%), Italy with 8,749 voters (2.28%) and Panama with 8,205 voters or 2.13%.
The city with the largest registration of expat voters is New York with 124,556 voters. In Europe, Madrid is the city with the most voters with 43,735 registered of 63,022 for all of Spain.
