The National Police and the United States Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) have signed a cooperation agreement to fight organized crime in the DR. Police chief, Major General Nelson Peguero Paredes and the assistant director of the International Operations Division at FBI Headquarters, Carlos Cases signed the agreement, and Ambassador James Brewster also represented the US.
The agreement creates the Transnational Crime Unit, an investigative team made up of 15 members of the National Police. The Embassy reports that the team members were selected by the FBI and trained at the FBI’s Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia, will focus on combating transnational organized crime and other threats within the Dominican Republic, including money laundering, drug and firearm offenses, and other crimes. The team will also work in cooperation with FBI personnel on matters of mutual interest inside the country.
