According to the Mexican cement company, Cemex, the reason the construction of the Carretera Gregorio Luperon (Carretera de Maimon) has been halted is because the contracting Office of Supervisory Engineering Works of the State (OISOE) maintains a RD$300 million debt with them for works already carried out. “We recognize the importance of the highway and the high interest of the communities to enjoy a safe road, but we cannot continue when the government is 18 months behind with its payments,” said the company, as reported in El Dia
As reported, Cemex won the tender to build the 28.3 km road and extend it to four lanes. It connects the community of Luperon to Maimon where the Carnival cruise ship terminal, Amber Cove, is located. An estimated 300,000 cruise ship passengers are expected to visit this 2016.
