Diario Libre reports that the Santo Domingo International Book Fair has been postponed until September and will now be held from 20 September to 2 October 2016.
The reason for the delay is the work being carried out around the National Theater, combined with the proximity of the elections in May. The Book Fair is usually held in late April-early May.
The postponement should come as a relief for the government during election time when it would have had to deal with the consequences of the Ministry of Culture’s controversial decision to award the Pedro Henriquez Urena Prize to Nobel Prize Winner Mario Vargas Llosa. The Peruvian author was widely criticized for his article in Spanish newspaper El Pais comparing Dominican migration policies to discriminatory laws in Nazi Germany.
