Santo Domingo Mayor Roberto Salcedo, who is seeking re-election for a fourth term, has announced his choice of civil engineer Francina Hungria as candidate for deputy mayor. Hungria received widespread support for her courageous and dignified response after being blinded during an armed robbery on a city street in the Piantini neighborhood in Santo Domingo where she was working on a high-rise construction project. She now chairs a foundation in her name and works for blind people. In recognition of her positive attitude she was voted Woman of the Year by Diario Libre newspaper in 2013.
Salcedo has served as mayor of Santo Domingo since 2002 when he was elected on the same PLD ticket. He was elected for the 2002-2006, 2006-2010 and 2010-2016 terms.
