Chile’s ambassador Fernando Barrera Robinson announced the start of operations of the Chilean Chamber of Commerce in the Dominican Republic at an event held at the Embassy of Chile in Santo Domingo on Monday, 8 March 2016. The ambassador says that at least 25,000 Dominicans living legally in Chile would purchase Dominican products. In recent years there has been an increase in trade that now accounts for US$90 million. He expects the Chamber to be influential in increasing trade, investment and tourism between both countries. He said that talks are in process for an agreement aimed at promoting trade between both countries. The ambassador says that Chile has lots of experience to share with Dominicans in technical and professional training, investments and mining.
Businessman Luis Rodriguez, the first president of the Chamber, says that the entity will promote Dominican exports to Chile, contributing to the Dominican Republic’s balance of trade. In 2015, trade between the DR and Chile increased 9%, going from US$81.6 million in 2014 to US$88.2 million in 2015. The DR’s main exports to Chile are rum (US$24.1 million) and pharmaceuticals. There is also potential for exports of tropical fruits, coffee, cacao, beer, beauty products, clothing, free zone manufactured products, especially medical devices, said Rodriguez.
The Dominican-Chilean Chamber of Commerce is located at Av. Roberto Pastoriza 202, 2nd floor, Tel 809 331-6000 or l.rodriguez@camarachilenard.org
