A report in Diario Libre confirms that works are advancing on the National Theater remodeling and that it will be ready on the established date of 10 April 2016. The first major event to be held at the National Theater is expected to be the Soberano Awards, the Oscars-style awards ceremony for the best in show business in the Dominican Republic. The event would have coincided with the National Book Fair, but after the fair was postponed to September, this is no longer an issue. The Soberano Awards are scheduled for 3 May 2016.
The National Theater in Santo Domingo is being made brand new. The seating, carpeting, air conditioning have been replaced. Some 200 parking spaces have been added, bringing the total to 600. The government says it is spending RD$140 million on the facelift.
