Civil society group Participacion Ciudadana reports that their electoral monitoring shows that the PLD and its allied political parties that support President Danilo Medina’s re-election spent RD$369 million on print, radio and TV propaganda or 81.5% in February 2016 alone. This is more than RD$12.5 million a day. The ruling PLD party’s main rival, the PRM and its allies, disbursed 17.8% of the funds allocated for the electoral campaigns in February by the JCE.
Alianza por la Democracia minority party presidential candidate, Minou Tavarez Mirabal says that the central government has spent RD$1.11 billion on propaganda in the first two months of the year. She wonders how many hospital beds, low-cost houses or wage increases for doctors and teachers could have been funded by that money, as reported in MetroRD. “That is the cost to our country of Danilismo and Joao Santana; that is how they waste everyone’s money, they couldn’t care less about the people and the problems we suffer,” she stated.
