Administrative Minister of the Presidency Jose Ramon Peralta says that President Danilo Medina has ordered the suspension of all government advertising until 15 May 2016. In addition, no state organizations may enter into new contracts or continue work on existing ones until that date.
Peralta said that this measure means that no institution could say that a state advertisement has been changed for a political one.
The decision has been taken in response to opposition complaints that the government is using its publicity budget to promote Medina’s reelection.
Alianza por la Democracia minority party presidential candidate, Minou Tavarez Mirabal says that the central government has spent RD$1.11 billion on propaganda in the first two months of the year.
