PRM Presidential candidate Luis Abinader says that his family fortune runs into the tens of millions of dollars.
In a recent interview with journalist Jorge Ramos on Univision, Ramos asked him how much money he had and pushed him for an actual figure. Abinader initially said that there was capital of around a million or a million and a half dollars in his name but Ramos pushed and asked him whether he would be prepared for Transparency International to establish exactly how much money he had if he were to become president.
Abinader then said that his family had tens of millions of dollars but would not say exactly how much. Ramos then started talking about corruption when Hipolito Mejia was President and Abinader agreed that there had been corruption during the Mejia administration although he personally was not corrupt.
Finally, Ramos asked the PRM candidate that if elected, would his government agree to his family not being allowed to have contracts with the government. Abinader replied that his family had not had business ventures with the government since 1983 and even when pressed he insisted that had never been the case.
