National Police spokesman Maximo Baez Aybar says that three people have been arrested following an attempted robbery of the offices of a transport organization linked to the Fenatrano transport association in the Los Girasoles area in Santo Domingo.
Baez Aybar said that two of the men who were arrested were members of the Preventive Police and have been expelled from the force.
One is in a hospital being treated for injuries sustained in the shootout on Sunday evening, 27 March 2016. Three more were injured and another two were killed. One of the dead men was named as Jose Luis Mena Lara (El Cuervo) and the other was only known as Leopoldo or Leo.
The injured were identified as 29-year old Geraldo Joaquin Tejada Perdomo, Nefit Belangel Tamarez, 27, the two privates Anthony Rijo Perez and Edward Rafael Camilo Munoz (El Chino), and Alejandro Rodriguez (Alex Suzuki), who is currently in the Calventi Hospital.
Also injured in the shootout were police officers Second Lieutenant Virgilio Martinez Grullon and Sergeant Carlos Manuel Munoz Polonia, who are being treated at the National Police hospital.
Following the incident police agents confiscated a black Land Rover Discovery, a grey Honda Civic, two motorcycles and military uniforms including bulletproof vests and two helmets along with four handguns including those assigned to the police privates.
The Sinatraur transport association had between three and four million pesos in cash in the offices at the time of the raid.
Manager and Financial Director Manuel Encarnacion said the reason there was so much money was because it was Easter and the banks were closed. The security guard at the offices, 31-year old Welington Manuel Rodriguez Urena is also under investigation.
