The regional director of the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Matthew Donahue visited President Danilo Medina at the Presidential Palace yesterday, Tuesday 29 March 2016. The visit comes at a time when a new scandal of judicial lenience towards drug traffickers is making headlines, following a decision by an alternate judge in La Romana, Aristilda Mercedes, to release five Venezuelans reportedly caught in possession of 359 kilos of cocaine in two suitcases and two handbags on a private Cessna plane that had flown in from Venezuela, on the grounds of a supposed technicality.
El Dia reports today, Wednesday 30 March 2016 that the judge had made an error in the date on the authorization warrant to inspect the airplane. Nevertheless, legal experts say the warrant was unnecessary because the airplane was parked in a public place.
