The Colegio Medico Dominicano (CMD) that primarily represents public hospital staff labor claims announced it was calling off a 72-hour nationwide strike at public hospitals originally scheduled for today, Friday 1 April 2016. The strikes are aimed at putting pressure on the government for a 60% wage raise, improvements to hospitals and other benefits that would come from a 5% of GDP allocation to the public health sector. The work stoppages in public hospitals affect their main users, who are poor and uninsured patients.
The strike was called off after a call to dialogue was personally made by Minister of Public Health Altagracia Guzman Marcelino.
