The Metro Office (Opret) says that once construction of the Metro line 2 to Santo Domingo East is completed, it is most likely that work will begin on the extension of the line to Los Alcarrizos in Santo Domingo North. Transport Development Fund (Fondet) president Milciades Perez Polanco says that the next phase will extend the Metro until Km 9 of the Duarte Highway, at the crossing with the densely populated Los Alcarrizos neighborhood.
“It will get there as it says in the plans. I would say that possibly after this extension it will be, if not the next stretch, then the one after that.”
The Metro is being extended from the Francisco del Rosario Sanchez Bridge to the Mega Centro shopping mall in Santo Domingo East.
Perez was speaking during the opening of the First Congress for Transport, Transit and Mobility organized by the Dominican Association of Engineers, Architects and Surveyors (Codia) yesterday, Thursday 31 March 2016 to examine transport progress by the government and possible solutions to the problems affecting the sector.
Perez says the government is working on implementing the feeder network whereby fare-paying bus passengers can continue their journeys on the metro. He expressed optimism that the bus feeder network will be implemented in the next government.
